EVENT
IN SUMBAWA
Barapan Kebo/ Kerapan
Kerbau
This buffalo race to
held once of year, before the sowing of the rice, in
almost every district of Sumbawa. The race track is
a field already ploughed, ready for sowing. A pair
of buffaloes is harnessed to a narrow wooden sled,
attached to a frame shaped like a letter A, and
elaborately decorated with tassels and embroideries
on their bodies. The riders race their buffaloes to
the finish line, marked with several bamboo poles,
while the spectators, clad in their finish clothes,
enthusiastically support their favorite riders. The
riders do not only have to race their buffaloes, but
they also have to knock down one of the poles at the
finish line by hitting it with the shaft of the
frame. This is particulary difficult to achieve as
buffaloes are clumsy animals, and it is often more
difficult to stop them at the finish line. After the
races the owner of the winning buffaloes will dance
to the accompaniment of drums, gongs and flutes, and
the cheers of the audience. See Male’an sampi –
Lombok.
