LOCATION AND NATURAL CONDITION

Sumbawa Island is located on the East part of the Lombok island, on the position of 116" 42' until 118"22' East Longitude and 8'8' until 9'7' South latitude having the area width of 8.493 km2.

 

From the topographic point of view, the surface of the soil in the area of Sumbawa Island is not flat or tend to be hilly with the height ranging from 0 to 1730 meters above sea level, where most of them, that is as wide as 355.108 ha or 41.81 percent have the height of 100 until 500 meters.

 

CLIMATE and RAINFALL

Sumbawa Island has a tropical climate which is influenced by the rainy season and the dry season. In the year 2007 the maximum temperature reached 38,6o C which happened in November and the minimum temperature is 17.0oC which happened in August. The maximum humidity reach 89%, with a minimum of 64%, while the maximum air pressure is 1.011,9 mb, with a minimum of 1008,5 mb. The most wind moves south East with the highest velocity of 20 knots / seconds which happened on February.

 

The existence of natural phenomenon such as Elnino that hit some of the Indonesian region including the Sumbawa Island, influences the number of rainy days and rainfalls that happened along the year 2007. The rainy days are less compared to the previous year that is 109 days, most of them happened on December till January which were 29 days.

 

The same thing happened with the rainfalls. The most rainfalls happened on February which was as much as 478.3 mm, and then on December and January with the rainfalls of 373.6 and 203.5 mm respectively.

 

One factor that is influential to the rainy days and rainfalls is the amount of evaporation. The amount of evaporation can influence the amount of rainy days and rainfalls that happens on the next period. Along the year of 2007 the evaporation range between 182.5 mm until 282.2 mm. Compared to the year before there is a high increase on the average rate of evaporation from 191.2 mm into 297.8 mm.
