WEST SUMBAWA REGENCY
MALUK and SEKONGKANG
The area has developed
incredibly since about 1995 with the construction
and later operation of the Newmount Nusa Tenggara
cooper / gold mine extended more or less 30 km east
of Maluk. The towns of Taliwang, Jereweh and
particularly Maluk have received direct and indirect
benefits of housing, facilities, businesses and
income entering the community. For example, there
are ATMs, banks, shops, health facilities, etc.
perhaps at higher levels than anywhere else in
Sumbawa. Accommodation is available for tourists in
the various hotels in Maluk and Sekongkang. There
are numerous restaurants and entertainment
facilities in these places. Nearby, there is an
airport located at Sekongkong, near to the Tropical
Spa and Resort on Pesin Beach. Tropical Airstrip
flights, which are daily between Denpasar and / or
Mataram and Sekongkang, provide direct access to
this area.
POTO BATU BEACH
Situated in the sub
district of Jereweh, Poto Batu Beach is a great
place for swimming, sailing or just relaxing and
taking in the beautiful surroundings.
SUMBAWA BESAR REGENCY
BATU TERANG
Liang Petang cave is
located in the village of Batu Terang 29 km south of
Sumbawa Besar. With its stalagmites and stalactites.
It is a fascinating natural phenomenon; some
resembles a weaving loom. The order cave in the area
is the home for hundreds of fruit bats. Also in this
area of Ai Renung area sarcophagi, stone graves
built 2000 year ago.
BUNGIN ISLAND
Located near Alas in
north-west Sumbawa Bungin Island is the most densely
populated island in the world, it is built from
coral and sand and there is almost no vacant land.
The island inhabited by the Bajo people. And its
area is becoming larger as the inhabitats extend the
island as the population increases.
MOYO ISLAND
Moyo Island has a huge
animal reserve where sighting of animals such as
wild boar, deer and majestic looking birds are
common. With its crystal clear waters and
spectacular coral formation, Moyo Island offers
great snorkeling and diving opportunities. Stay in
the very upmarket Amanwana resort with its island by
boat from Kencana Bay or Air Bari north of Sumbawa
Besar.
PLAMPANG and EMPANG
Eastern Sumbawa Regency
has intresting farmlands, hills and agriculture.
Beaches with good waves for surfing exist on the
southern coast.
SEMONGKAT
Located in Batu Lereng
south of Sumbawa Besar, this recreation area is a
perfect place to escape the heat. Situated on the
slopes of hill, the breeze is refreshing while
viewing the beauty of the area.
SULTAN'S PALACE (Dalam
Loka)
Located in Sumbawa
Besar, the Sultan’s Palace possesses some ancient
structures which belonging to the Sultanate od
Sumbawa. These majestic buildings are of traditional
design and have ninety-nine wooden pillars to remind
all followers of Asmaul Husna of the ninety nine
names given to their God.
DOMPU REGENCY
DORO BATA
Just one kilometer from
Dompu. Doro Bata is an archaeologist’s treasure
trove. This area is said to have been home to a
grand kingdom. Here can be found the remains of the
Dompu palace which was covered with volcanic dust
during mount Tambora’s eruption in 1815.
HU'U and LAKEY BEACH
Some of the best waves
in the word can be found here on the South Coast.
The waves offer surfers long rides due to outlying
reefs, surfing sport with names such as lake peak,
Periscopes, Cobblestones, etc. others find great
pleasure wading among the abundant coral. There are
a number of other places of interest to tourists in
the area such as caves and a hot spring. There are a
range of good quality small hotels and delightful
guest houses that line the beach.
LEPADI
5 km south of Dompu,
this is best known for the traditional horse races
it hosts each year. These races have very small
jockeys, children aged no more than eight years.
Such races are also held at various time a year in
other Sumbawa locations.
MOUNT TAMBORA
A three-day hike
beginning at the small village of Pancasila near
Calabai takes you through dense rain forest and on
to the huge and awesome crater.
Tambora Utara (North)
wildlife reserve (80,000 ha) and Tambora Selatan
(South) Hunting Park (30,000 ha) are two protected
site located in the north-west of Bima Peninsular.
Deer and wild pigs can be found here.
SATONDA
The Satonda islet
consists of the top of an emerging volcano (300 m)
and has unique geological features with a salt water
lake. The destruction of the forest on the islet
dating back to the 1815 Mt Tambora eruption offers
researchers a unique opportunity to study forest
colonization. The island is home to many bird
species and an endemic fish. The Moti Tol lake, in
the old Satonda crater, accupies almost half of the
island. Sea turtles nest on the islet.
BIMA REGENCY
BIMA and THE ROYAL
PALACE
Bima-Raba is the
capital od the Bima regency and also the connecting
port od eastern, central and western Indonesia. The
restored former Sultan;s palace contains interesting
historical items such as the royal crown and some
kris with gem studded gold and ivory hilts.
RABA - DOMPU VILLAGE
Famous for the Mbjo
woven cloth that it produces, Raba-Dompu people
still weave these beautiful cloth in the traditional
manner, making products of high quality and of
exquisite design.
DONGGO VILLAGE
Donggo, 40 km by road,
is the oldest village in Bima. The inhabitants here
have costumes and traditions which differ from those
of other villages. They have preserved a unique
ethnic identity, wear distinctive black clothing,
observe their own hierarchical order and build their
own traditional houses. Donggo villagers earn their
living by farming and cultivating in irrigated
fields on hilly slopes. They produce a high quality
woven cloth in a process of making thread, designing
patterns and dyeing material still done
traditionally. Other craft produced here include
writing Sanskrit manuscripts onto tablets of stone.
MADA PANGA
With its tropical
forest, Mada Pangga is an area of great natural
beauty. Many teak (Jati) trees grow in this lush
rainforest which is also filled with animals and
colorful birds.
MOUNT SANGEANG
A smoking conical
volcano jutting 2000m out of the sea off the
north-east coast, Mt. Sangeang’s slopes and its
surroundings are popular with scientists seeking
knowledge about our natural environment. A beautiful
place encircled by a clear blue sea, Mt Sangeang can
be easily reached by boat or perahu from the Bima
Area.
WAWO - MARIA AREA
Located on the tourist
route connecting Bima with Komodo island, the Wawo –
Maria Area make products of high quality and of
exquisite cloth design. Maria is noted for its
traditional lumbung or rice barn (lengge) gathered
together on a hill outside the village.
Nearby at Wawo, lies
the Dutch colonial recreation site Oi Wobo. It has a
Dutch heritage manor (Pasenggrahan Wawo) and
swimming pool fed by spring water and provide
tourist accommodation.
